Advanced Magick for Beginners

It’s finally here: the new full-length from The Contrarian, Advanced Magick for Beginners. The most personal Contrarian album to date, Advanced Magick boasts a broad musical palette and revealing lyrics. From the electric eden of ’60s Great Britain to American stoner sludge, this aural headtrip proves once again that The Contrarian is your overlord.

The record is available in three “Pay What Thou Wilt” packages, starting with an absolutely FREE 11-track digital download. But you might want the Advanced Magick III bundle, which comes with a rare, before-the-camera appearance by The Contrarian speaking candidly about what it took to make this record a reality. Trust us, this is as emo as the dude gets.

As always, you can listen to the album in full on our Music page; snag your downloads in the Shop.

Happy Strange Angels Day!

Today is 9/11. Which sounds vaguely familiar… you know what else today is? The release of the new record by Strange Angels, the recording project of Arthur Leon Adams III and Casey Hades Rae.

And What’s to Be Done with All of These Strange Angels is an effervescent little pop gem with curiously psychedelic overtones. Or, as composers Arthur and Casey like to call it, a “teenage symphony to Xenu.”

Download comes with artwork and liner notes from the legendary Derek Taylor.

$5 Music + Artwork + Liner Notes!

You can also find the album at iTunes, eMusic, Amazon and all those streaming sites that pay fractions of pennies to us beleaguered labels and artists. Listening without the burden of monetary exchange can be done right here.

A Teenage Symphony to Xenu

Over the past year, Arthur Leon Adams III and I have been working on a little project we like to call Strange Angels. And now, at long last, there’s a record. We conceived of And What’s to Be Done with All of These Strange Angels as a paean to bootstrapping California — those heady days of scientific and mystical exploration where the dream of Utopia met outright charlatanism, and where the elevation of body and spirit came crashing down in the relentless commodification of Eden.

Or, as the always clever Arthur describes it, “A Teenage Symphony to Xenu.”

No record can possibly contain all of these themes, but we had fun trying. Strange Angels is officially released in August, but today we’re thrilled to show you the album art, which Arthur put together himself. That means it’s time for a contest!

Whoever can accurately name the most characters/items depicted on the cover wins something really fucking awesome (you’ll just have to trust us there.) You can leave your guesses in the comments or email casey.contrarianATgmail.com. Good luck, pets.

Invocation of My Demon Sister

We met Frater Parsons de Lautreamont in our travels. An erudite — dare we say recondite — gentleman known to certain fraternal circles, de Lautreamont advised us in matters esoteric, mentioning only in passing his musical exploits. From what we can gather, the Frater rarely indulges in commercial exploitation of sound, preferring instead to harness his expression for ritual purposes.

Lucky for us, then, that he consented to offer this aural talisman, which we have taken the liberty of calling Invocation of My Demon Sister, partially in honor of the infamous Kenneth Anger short (with a clear gender differential).

The work is what some might call “dark ambient,” but we think there’s some light within the Stygian. At moments, Invocation of My Demon Sister even resembles Brian Eno and Robert Fripp’s Evening Star.

Because of its strange provenance, we are offering Invocation of My Demon Sister to you, free of charge for a limited time.

The Contrarian: Margins EP = FREE!

The Contrarian is giving away the Margins EP exclusively on LUX ETERNA. Here’s what composer/producer Casey Rae-Hunter has to say about the release.

I’m currently in that uncomfortable period between albums, but I’m still recording as often as possible. The four songs on the Margins EP are, to some degree, a continuation of Farewell Plutonia. Which is why I’m not considering them for the next record. But rather than abandon them, I figured I’d release them to the world just to clear the slate. Hopefully, these tracks will tide people over until the next record makes its presence known.

Download the Margins EP below. (Existing LUX ETERNA customers may have to provide their e-mail again.)

Anastam is Here!

What is the sound of a thousand suns collapsing? The blossoming of desire and the splendor of decomposition? We think we have a pretty good idea.

Free Track from Strange Angels!

Strange Angels is the recording project of composers/producers Arthur Leon Adams III and Casey Rae-Hunter. Their upcoming record runs the gamut from art-pop to Beatles bounce to psychedelica, with a little They Might Be Giants thrown in for good measure. Here’s a track called “Hotel Suite,” which is definitely more on the “psych epic” side of things:
